Excellence begins here.

NOTE: PhD Excellence Initiative Fellows receive their appointments via Stanford Graduate School of Business, but must apply through our program’s portal. Applications are considered separately from those of the GSB.

Did you know…

Recent research shows that 65% of U.S.-born Economics PhD recipients have at least one parent with a graduate degree, and 20% have at least one parent with a PhD. Only 13% are first-generation college graduates.

In contrast, across major PhD fields overall, only 12% of recipients have a parent with a PhD, and 30% are first-gen college grads.

The economics profession is failing to capture its share of talent, as well as the perspectives needed to drive effective policymaking.

We aim to solve that problem.

Mentorship Matters.

Celebrating ten years and counting.

In 2022, the PhD Excellence Initiative moved to Stanford University from NYU Stern, thanks to support from the Hoover Institution and a gracious welcome from Stanford Graduate School of Business, where our fellows receive their appointments. Among the core institutional priorities at Hoover: addressing challenges to advanced economies by expanding access to quality education.
