Message from Peter Blair Henry

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I’m pleased to invite you to PhDEI’s 11th Annual Summer Research Workshop, which will be held in person in NYC on Friday, June 28th at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, with an off-site “family reunion”/ icebreaker dinner on Thursday, June 27th.

We are grateful to the Hoover Institution and the NY Fed for their renewed and generous support for this event—and to Kartik B. Athreya, the Director of Research and Head of the Research and Statistics Group at the NY Fed, who will welcome us with opening remarks.

Friday’s program is estimated to run from 8:30 AM – 6:00 PM (ET) and will include breakfast, lunch, and a closing reception, with participation by Fed researchers. As always, we’re planning an inspiring agenda of student and faculty presentations for supportive discussion, and we look forward to a day of continued learning, collegiality, and representation in our profession.

We look forward to receiving your RSVP (say yes!), and until then…

All good wishes,

Peter Blair Henry

IDENTIFICATION: Please be sure that the name you have used to RSVP is the same as what is on your identification. The NY Fed will check ID upon entry to the building. Note: “NYC ID” is not accepted for entry.

ATTIRE: Out of respect to your colleagues and our hosts at the NY Fed, we suggest “business casual” attire (e.g., blouse or collared shirt).

RECORDING/IMAGES: NO recording of sessions by attendees is permitted. We (as hosts) may document portions of the Workshop for internal use, and both we and the NY Fed may take pictures for use on digital platforms. Your participation is assent to this use.

TWITTER: Connect with us! @PhDEI_Econ will use the hashtag #PhDEI2024 — the Fed team will also pay attention to participant accounts for RT opportunities; they are @NewYorkFed

Travel Logistics

ACCOMMODATIONS: We have once again secured a block of discounted rooms at the Millennium Downtown Hotel, in the heart of the Financial District, for Thursday and Friday nights. When you indicate on our RSVP form that you would like this option, we will send a link for you to book your room. A limited number of student rooms will be prepaid by the program (room rates only; you will need to place a credit card on file to hold the room and the card will be used for any incidental charges you might incur). Others may submit a request for reimbursement, following Stanford guidelines. Faculty will use the same reservation link to access the hotel discount and will receive an honorarium that will offset their cost for accommodations.

TRANSPORTATION: Please indicate expected transportation needs on our RSVP form. For air travel, we ask that you book your own tickets. With authorization and adherence to Stanford University guidelines (e.g., economy tickets only), students may use our booking system for program payment of tickets, or will be reimbursed once travel is complete. Thanks to the generosity of the NY Fed, we also have the ability to assist with booking and pre-payment of train travel for a limited number of students traveling in the Northeast corridor.

EXPENSES: Through the Hoover Institution, faculty will receive an honorarium to cover costs associated with participation in the Workshop. Student costs will be covered through a combination of payments made on your behalf (limited availability) and reimbursements. For effective travel assistance and to ensure timely reimbursements, we strongly urge you to fill out our RSVP form as soon as possible, and before MAY 1st.

Thursday Social

WELCOME DINNER: Our prior-evening social / welcome dinner — which we like to think of as the “PhDEI Family Reunion” — will take place on Thursday, June 27 at GRAN MORSI, and will begin with an hors d’oeuvres reception at 6:30pm. Our menu will include options suitable for all dietary requirements that have been indicated on participant RSVP forms. Please note that as this is an official University event, alcohol will not be included; for those who are of age and wish to consume, please plan to order through a separate cash bar.
